Gaelic Players Association to honour legendary former hurler

One of Gaelic Games brightest stars, Tony Wall, will be celebrated in Croke Park on Saturday 17th August 2019 with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Gaelic Players Association (GPA). The former Tipperary hurler will receive the award at the 7th annual GPA Hurling Legends Lunch.

As one of Hurling’s greatest centre-backs, Tony has a long list of achievements. These include five All-Ireland medals, eleven Tipperary senior titles, five Celtic Cross medals, and five Inter-provincial Championships. He’s even a published author with his book, simply titled, ‘Hurling’ by Tony Wall (1965).

On being selected for the award Tony said:

“I am really and truly honoured to be given this Lifetime Achievement Award. I’m an old fella now but I still keep a firm eye on the game and I have great admiration for the skills of our current hurlers. I had a very fulfilling hurling career and it’s very special to be recognised by the GPA in this way.”

The Gaelic Players Association picked Tony for this year’s award to celebrate his long-standing career and contribution to hurling as a player, captain, and champion.

The GPA Lifetime Achievement Award is presented to legendary, former inter-county players for their outstanding contribution to Gaelic Football and Hurling and society.

Paul Flynn, CEO of the GPA, said:

“The Gaelic Players Association is honoured to present Tony with the GPA Lifetime Achievement Award for 2019. His iconic hurling career touched the lives of so many on and off the field and we are delighted to acknowledge his contribution to the game and Irish society.

“Our vision is to help players thrive on and off the pitch and we are proud to have set in motion all the things our members, past and present players, enjoy today concerning representation, development and welfare. This event is to celebrate all legendary former, inter-county players and to remind them to engage with the range of GPA services offered to all members – current and former – including medical assistance and hardship support.”

All players who have played at senior level for their county are welcome to attend this event free of charge and proceeds from this event will go towards the GPA Former Players Benevolent Fund.
