Scholarship opportunities at WIT announced for GPA and WGPA members

The Gaelic Players Association (GPA) and Women’s Gaelic Players Association (WGPA) together with Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT) are offering five scholarships to inter-county players for the 2020/2021 academic year.  This is the latest in a series of educational supports which have been announced by the players’ bodies in recent weeks.

The five scholarships consist of one funded Masters of Business Administration and four funded Masters of Business Studies which will be split equally between GPA and WGPA members.  The announcement was made at WIT’s campus on Friday, August 7th.

WIT and Waterford players Calum Lyons (Hurling), Chloe Fennell (Football) and Orla Hickey (Camogie) were in attendance at the announcement. They were joined by GPA CEO Paul Flynn, WGPA Treasurer Kate Kelly, WIT Head of Sport Jack Lyons, Dr. Paul Morrissey and Dr. Sheila O’Donohoe, Joint Programme Directors for the Master of Business and John Windle, Head of WIT Viking Sport/WIT Arena Manager.

Speaking at the announcement Paul Flynn said; “We’re committed to supporting the education and development of our members.  We’re delighted to have the support of educational institutions around the country which is essential if we are to be able to do this.  I would like to thank the team at WIT for their ongoing backing of inter-county players.”

Kate Kelly added; “I would like to thank all of those involved in helping make today’s announcement.  Opportunities like these are hugely beneficial to players as they consider life outside of the white lines of a pitch.  We’re delighted to partner with the GPA and WIT.”

Professor Denis Harrington, Head of Graduate Business stated; “We are pleased to collaborate with both the WGPA and GPA again this year in providing this scholarship opportunity. Recipients play an active role in college and community life and gain significantly from our professionally oriented programmes. In providing these opportunities for graduates, it facilitates pathways for them into the employment market as well as allowing them to take advantage of the international dimension of Irish business and entrepreneurial opportunities”

The closing date for applications is Thursday 20th August.  GPA members can contact karen@gaelicplayers.com for further information while WGPA members can contact gemma@gaelicplayers.com.  Alternatively, members can contact Margo.ODowd@WIT.ie.
