GPA and WGPA strengthen relationship with UU as academic scholarships are doubled

News

The Gaelic Players Association (GPA), the Women’s Gaelic Players Association (WGPA) and Ulster University (UU) have announced a doubling of academic scholarships available for inter-county players.  Four fully funded scholarships are now available to GPA and WGPA members.

The announcement further strengthens the relationship between the players bodies and the university which initially started in 2018 with the GPA, with the WGPA coming on board last year.

Down camogie player and current UU student Sara-Louise Carr was at UU’s Jordanstown Campus for today’s announcement alongside her fellow UU student and Tyrone footballer Michael McKernan.

They were joined for the announcement by UU Sports Manager David Flynn, Amanda Castray, UU Director of Campus Life, WGPA Project Coordinator Gemma Begley and GPA Head of Operations and Finance Ciarán Barr.

Speaking to mark the occasion John Farrell, UU GAA President, said; “We are delighted to launch our partnership with the GPA and WGPA.  High level sports achievement and academic achievement are intrinsically linked. We are keen to ensure that we provide an environment that allows players to thrive on and off the field of play.”

Speaking on behalf of the GPA Ciarán Barr said; “This is another major development as we continue to support the education of our members.  This comes on the back of similar announcements we have made with educational facilities right across Ireland.  These are vital as we continue with our aim of helping players thrive off the field as well as on.”

Gemma Begley added; “The importance of these scholarships to players should never be underestimated.  They allow players opportunities they may never have had otherwise.  We’re very proud to be able to offer these opportunities and would encourage our members to carefully consider applying.”

The closing date for applications is August 28th.  For further information contact karen@gaeliplayers.com or gemma@wgpa.ie.
