Clare hurler Tony Griffin and Fermanagh footballer Marty McGrath were today named 2008 Halifax GPA Fair Play Award winners. For the first time this year, the Fair Play Award scheme has been extended, rewarding players from both hurling and football individually. A brand new club award has also been announced to pay recognition to people who make tireless contributions to their clubs off the pitch.
Speaking at the announcement, GPA Chief Executive Dessie Farrell said, “I am delighted that Halifax has supported us in extending the Fair Play Awards scheme in 2008. Tony and Marty have both been through a lot over the past 12 months, on and off the pitch and have proved ambassadors for our national games. This was a very difficult decision for the Committee, as it always is, but overall we felt that Tony and Marty both stood out and deserve due recognition for the spirit in which they have conducted themselves.
“Tony has recently completed a mammoth 4300km charity cycle alongside Lance Armstrong, raising significant sums of money for cancer charities, while Marty has overcome a serious illness and displayed bravery and immense dedication in returning to the very top of his game, going on to represent Ireland in the International Rules series."
Now in the second year of its sponsorship of the Fair Play Award scheme, Halifax’s commitment to developing the game and supporting its players is ongoing through their partnership with the GPA, Dermot McArdle’s GaelicPerformance camps and the Hurling Twinning Programme, which will be consolidated in 2009.
In addition to the extended Halifax GPA Fair Play Hurling and Football Awards, which honour individual players, this year Halifax and the GPA will also launch another awards programme which will pay tribute to the contribution of individuals and their tireless dedication to clubs off the pitch.

Speaking about the new award, Karl Manning, Director of Sales Capability at Halifax said “Halifax is very proud to play a part in this important award scheme and I would like to personally congratulate Marty and Tony on being selected for the 2008 Halifax GPA Fair Play Awards. They are certainly worthy winners and are first class role models.”
“Halifax has stated its commitment to supporting Gaelic Games at grassroots level and this new award is yet another manifestation of this aim. I know from personal experience that people who work behind the scenes at club level often don’t get national recognition and we plan to change this with our new awards programme specifically developed to highlight the selfless dedication that is displayed across Ireland. After all, without strong administrative and structural support, clubs can not challenge for success on the pitch, which is the ultimate ambition.
Fliers and posters detailing the new award will be on display in the 43 Halifax banks nationwide from 24th November and nominations must be submitted by 12th December, with the winner due to be announced in the New Year. They will receive €5,000 worth of gear for their club as well as tickets to the All-Ireland final of their choice including one night’s accommodation in Dublin to complete the prize package. Recipients of the Halifax Fair Play Players Awards each receive €15,000 towards their mortgage repayments, compliments of Halifax.
